Smart Grid Project Manager

We are seeking an individual for a Regular position as a Smart Grid Project Manager in the Electric & Water Distribution Division.

Job Purpose:

Responsible for managing the deployment and implementation of Smart Grid projects, schedules and budgets for electric delivery systems, and coordinating activities between all internal and external stakeholders. Analyze and monitor project financials and milestones, including cost-effective utilization of resources.  Develop strategies for Smart Grid applications and plans to mitigate “at-risk” projects.


Primary Functions:

  • Manage the implementation of all smart grid projects for electric delivery systems and coordinate activities between consultants, contractors, OUC staff and other stakeholders;

  • Develop and manage project charters and schedules for smart grid projects related to electric delivery systems, and guide projects through all relevant stages;

  • Monitor and coordinate all smart grid project schedules, budgets and resources for the Business Unit (Electric Transmission, Substation, and Distribution), to include personnel and system requirements from various groups;

  • Analyze project financials and monitor cost-effective utilization of resources;

  • Identify and develop strategies to mitigate or re-work “at-risk” projects to avoid cost overruns;

  • Review project loading to assess and plan for changes to project milestones, cost, budget and cash flows;

  • Coordinate and interface with various divisions to ensure deliverables are understood and completed in a timely manner;

  • Create standards for work flow of planning, engineering and construction phases of projects;

  • Identify and provide recommendations for best-practices in technology and application of smart grid projects;

  • Participate and assist in the capital budget development, estimation and coordination of smart grid projects including equipment, resources and related systems;

  • Attend seminars and advanced technical training as needed and available;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


· Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electric Engineering Technologies, Civil Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or other related degree

·  Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Electric Utility Distribution, Transmission or Substation Engineering and Construction Project Management, with three (3) of the eight (8) years in Project Management in areas of Smart Grid, Distributed Automation or Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) preferred


·  Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification to be obtained within one (1) year of hire


Working knowledge of all, but not limited to, the following:


o   Smart Grid;

o   Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) or Distributed automation applications;

o   Project Management principles and practices;

o   Project Management tools/applications;

o   Project schedules, Gantt charts, process flow charts, and milestone charts;

o   Project Charters;

o   Electric Utility Distribution and Transmission Systems;

o   Engineering drawings and one-line diagrams;

o   Microsoft Project;

Familiarity with all, but not limited to, the following:


o   Software Applications to include: AutoCAD, Customer Information Systems (i.e. PeopleSoft ERM, Customer Care & Billing) or similar applications;

o   Financial models;

o   Engineering diagrams;

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;

  • Analytical thinking and problem solving skills;

  • Excellent writing skills (contract terms and language);

  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills;

    Ability to:

o   Develop and maintain effective working relationships and work in a team environment;

o   Make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals, rates, ratios, and percentages

o   Use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.)
